On August 10, the Latin American Program (LAP) team from the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) took part in a discussion centered on the activities of arms companies and their implications for human rights in the Latin American region.
Organized by the Consulates of Mexico and Argentina in Rio de Janeiro, the event featured Eugenia Carbone, LAP's Director, who analyzed the impact of the arms trade on human rights, genocide prevention, and mass atrocities agendas. Also joining the panel were Miguel Ángel Reyes Moncayo, Deputy Legal Consultant of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE); Marcela García Corrêa, Amnesty International researcher in Brazil; and Alejandro Alday, a member of the Inter-American Juridical Committee.
This event was held within the framework of the IX Joint Meeting of Legal Consultants of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Organization of American States (OAS) member countries. In this context, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs - the focal point for Mexico in the Latin American Network for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (LAN) - conveyed the Mexican State's stance on the corporate responsibility of arms manufacturing companies and the human rights consequences of this industry. The Mexican Secretary of State also presented this position at the XIII Meeting of the Network held in October 2022 in Mexico City.
AIPG's engagement in the discussion contributed to reinforcing institutional bonds within the Latin American region, aligning agendas in collaboration with governmental institutions and the LAN member states, and emphasizing the importance of ongoing conversations regarding the corporate sector's pivotal role in human rights and atrocity prevention.
El 10 de agosto el equipo del Programa para América Latina (LAP) del Instituto Auschwitz para la Prevención del Genocidio y Atrocidades Masivas (AIPG) participó de un conversatorio sobre actividades de empresas de armas y sus efectos en los derechos humanos en la región latinoamericana.
Organizado por los Consulados de México y Argentina en Río de Janeiro, el evento contó con la participación de Eugenia Carbone, Directora de LAP, quien analizó el impacto del comercio de armas en las agendas de derechos humanos, prevención de genocidios y atrocidades masivas. En el panel también participaron Miguel Ángel Reyes Moncayo, Consultor Jurídico Adjunto de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores de México (SRE), Marcela García Corrêa, investigadora de Amnistía Internacional en Brasil, y Alejandro Alday, miembro del Comité Jurídico Interamericano. El Consulado de México en Río de Janeiro también reportó sobre esta actividad a través del comunicado aquí enlazado.
Este evento se realizó en el marco de la IX Reunión Conjunta de Consultores Jurídicos de los Ministerios de Relaciones Exteriores de los países miembros de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA). Fue en ese contexto que la SRE de México (Punto Focal de la Red Latinoamericana para la Prevención del Genocidio y Atrocidades Masivas) compartió la posición del Estado Mexicano sobre la responsabilidad corporativa de las empresas fabricantes de armas y sus consecuencias sobre los derechos humanos. Esta posición fue además presentada por la Secretaría de Estado de México en la XIII Reunión de la Red celebrada en octubre de 2022 en la Ciudad de México.
A su vez, la participación de LAP en el conversatorio sirvió para fortalecer lazos institucionales en la región latinoamericana, coordinar agendas en conjunto con instituciones de gobierno y estado miembros de la Red y remarcar la necesidad de continuar las conversaciones en torno al rol del sector corporativo como actor clave en materia de derechos humanos y prevención de atrocidades.
