On May 9, the Latin American Program (LAP) of the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPG) facilitated an in-person visit to its Buenos Aires office by representatives from the Ministry of Human Rights of Brazil. Alexandre Da Silva, the National Secretary for the Promotion and Defense of Elderly People’s Rights, and Danilo Vergani, a social policies technical analyst of the MHR, engaged in fruitful discussions with Eugenia Carbone, the LAP Director, and Nehuén D’Adam, the LAP Administrative Officer.
The meeting aimed to strengthen the relations between the Brazilian Ministry of Human Rights and AIPG while exploring shared agendas. Topics discussed included the identification of racism and other forms of discrimination as risk factors for mass atrocities, the significance of upholding older people’s rights in promoting citizenship, the role of African memory in contemporary Afro-descendant communities, and the challenges of job placement for refugees. On May 11, another noteworthy event took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Dr. Bruna Soares, Project Officer of LAP, participated in an in-person gathering organized by the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect. During this event, Bruna had the opportunity to meet and share insights with Alice Nderitu, AIPG alumna and Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide. Bruna presented the ongoing project of LAP in Roraima, Brazil, which focuses on Atrocity Prevention during the Latin American Migration Crisis.
The discussion also delved into the situation of the Yanomami people in Northern Brazil related to atrocity prevention. Additionally, this event proved instrumental in fostering new connections between AIPG and various social organizations in Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, it helped raise awareness about the crucial topic of atrocity prevention in Brazil.
These engagements signify AIPG's commitment to building collaborative partnerships and promoting atrocity prevention efforts across the Latin American region. The United Nations in Brazil also covered this event on its official platform.
El 9 de mayo, después de conversaciones con representantes del Ministerio de Derechos Humanos de Brasil el Programa para América Latina (LAP) coordinó una visita en persona de Alexandre Da Silva,Secretario Nacional de Derechos Humanos de Adultxs Mayores de Brasil y Danilo Vergani, analista técnico de políticas sociales del MDH a la oficina de BuenosAires. Ambos fueron recibidos por Eugenia Carbone, la Directora del LAP y Nehuén D’Adam, Oficial Administrativo del LAP para discutir diferentes temas.
Además de fortalecer las relaciones entre el Ministerio de Derechos Humanos de Brasil yAIPG, el encuentro también significó la oportunidad de explorar agendas conjuntas como la identificación del racismo y otras formas de discriminación como factores de riesgo de atrocidades masivas, la importancia de los derechos de lxs adultxs mayores en la construcción de ciudadanía, el rol de la memoria africana en las comunidades afrodescendientes actuales y las dificultades para la inserción laboral de refugiadxs.

El 11 de mayo Bruna Soares, Oficial de Proyectos del Programa para América Latina (LAP )participó de un evento en persona organizado por la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas para la Prevención del Genocidio y la Responsabilidad de Proteger celebrado en Río de Janeiro, Brasil. Allí Bruna compartió palabras con Alice Nderitu, alumna de AIPG y Asesora Especial del Secretario General sobre la Prevención del Genocidio, y le presentó el proyecto en curso del LAP en Roraima(Prevención de Atrocidades durante la Crisis Migratoria en América Latina -Brasil). Ellas también discutieron sobre la situación del pueblo Yanomami en elnorte de Brasil en clave de prevención de atrocidades.
Este evento también significó la oportunidad de generar nuevas relaciones entre AIPG y el circuito de organizaciones sociales de Río de Janeiro, así como para crear conciencia acerca de la prevención de atrocidades como un tema vital en Brasil.
