From July 2 to 5, 2023, the Auschwitz Institute's Polish Affairs Office successfully held the inaugural Samuel and Edith Fleischman Summer Academy. The event was co-organized by the Oświęcim Institute of Human Rights in Oswiecim, Poland, with the generous support of Edward Fleischman, son of Samuel and Edith Fleischman, both survivors of the Holocaust.
Bringing together 30 attendees from Poland, the three-day Summer Academy featured a series of lectures and discussions. Recognizing that understanding the mechanisms behind genocide and mass atrocities is fundamental to their prevention, the Summer Academy aimed to equip teachers, educators, and lecturers with comprehensive knowledge to disseminate and raise awareness of the dangers arising from the language of discrimination.
Participants had the opportunity to visit significant memorial sites, including the National Exhibitions in the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, providing essential education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust. Other visits included The Auschwitz Jewish Center and the synagogue, important sites memorializing the pre-war Jewish community in Oświęcim. Additionally, a tour of the city allowed participants to explore the historical Polish-Jewish topography.
The program encouraged participants to actively counter anti-Semitism, xenophobia, racism through their educational programming, and engage in peace initiatives with their students and communities. The Summer Academy was supported by a team of expert lecturers and experienced practitioners from the field of Holocaust Education, ensuring participants received reliable and accurate knowledge. The event fostered a network of committed teachers and educators, promoting the exchange of educational experiences and mutual support in their efforts.
The Samuel and Edith Fleischman Summer Academy marks an important milestone for AIPG and its Polish Affairs Program in advancing education on genocide prevention, and nurturing a community of dedicated individuals who will play a crucial role in combating hatred and promoting peace. We look forward to organizing this program annually in Oświęcim with our partners and providing further support to the growing community of educators who are our alumni.

Del 2 al 5 de julio de 2023, la Oficina de Asuntos Polacos del Instituto Auschwitz celebró con éxito la primera edición de la Academia de Verano Samuel y Edith Fleischman. El evento fue coorganizado por el Instituto Oświęcim de Derechos Humanos en la ciudad de Oswiecim, Polonia, con el generoso apoyo de Edward Fleischman, hijo de Samuel y Edith Fleischman, ambos sobrevivientes del Holocausto.
La Academia de Verano, de tres días de duración, reunió a 30 asistentes de Polonia y ofreció una serie de conferencias y debates. Reconociendo que la comprensión de los mecanismos que están detrás del genocidio y las atrocidades masivas es fundamental para su prevención, la Academia de Verano se propuso dotar a profesorxs, educadorxs y conferencista de amplios conocimientos para difundir y concienciar sobre los peligros derivados del lenguaje de la discriminación.
Lxs participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar sitios conmemorativos significativos, incluyendo las Exposiciones Nacionales en el Museo Estatal Auschwitz-Birkenau, que ofrecen educación esencial sobre Auschwitz y el Holocausto. También se visitaron el Centro Judío de Auschwitz y la sinagoga, importantes lugares conmemorativos de la comunidad judía de Oświęcim antes de la guerra.
El programa alentó a lxs participantes a actuar contra el antisemitismo, la xenofobia y el racismo a través de sus programas educativos, y a participar en iniciativas de paz con sus estudiantes y comunidades. La Academia de Verano contó con el apoyo de un equipo de expertxs y profesionales del ámbito educativo sobre el Holocausto, lo que garantizó que lxs participantes recibieran conocimientos fiables y precisos.
La Academia de Verano Samuel y Edith Fleischman representa un paso importante para AIPG y su Programa de Asuntos Polacos en la promoción de la educación para la prevención del genocidio, y en la formación de una comunidad de personas dedicadas que desempeñarán un papel crucial en la lucha contra el odio y la promoción de la paz. Esperamos organizar este programa anualmente en Oświęcim con nuestros socios y proporcionar más apoyo a la creciente comunidad de educadorxs que son nuestros ex alumnxs.
