What We Do
Government
Through the Global Government edition of our Raphael Lemkin Seminar for Genocide Prevention, AIPR, in partnership with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and the Joint Office of the United Nations Special Advisers on the Prevention of Genocide and the Responsibility to Protect, brings justice, foreign affairs, and human rights officials to the Holocaust site of Auschwitz in Poland for a week of intensive education in preventing genocide and other atrocity crimes.
Military
Through the U.S. Military edition of our Raphael Lemkin Seminar for Genocide Prevention, AIPR, in partnership with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and the United States Department of Defense, brings U.S. Army majors from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to the Holocaust site of Auschwitz in Poland for a week of intensive education in preventing mass atrocities and protecting civilians during military operations.
Academic
Through our academic program, AIPR, in partnership with the Center for the Study of Genocide, Conflict Resolution, and Human Rights at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, created an undergraduate course in genocide prevention, taught by Professor Alex Hinton as an upper-level anthropology class. AIPR’s long-term goal is for genocide prevention to be taught as part of the required curriculum at every college and university in the United States.
The men and women who attend the Lemkin Seminars emerge with a heightened commitment to preventing genocide and increased knowledge of the policy tools available, domestic and international alike. Even more important for the long term, they become members of 2PREVENT, the Auschwitz Institute’s network for Lemkin alumni, designed to help these rising leaders learn from and support one another in their daily work on the front lines of prevention. This sort of community has never before existed at the level of those who make and shape policy.
