On November 10, the Warren Educational Policy Program (WEPP) of the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) promoted at the Instituto Cervantes in São Paulo, the event Education and Democracy in Brazil. WEPP took advantage of the local launch of the research report Democratic Education Requires Imagination, an AIPG initiative in partnership with the British organization Protection Approaches, which sought to reflect on how education can be a fundamental and effective response to global democratic setbacks, to bring together specialists with a view to debating the challenges of democratic education in the current Brazilian context of political renewal. The discussion had the participation of Anna Helena Altenfelder (Cenpec), Crislei Custódio (Vladimir Herzog Institute), João Marcelo Borges (Unibanco Institute) and Michael França (Insper), in addition to the moderation of the director of WEPP, Clara Ramírez Barat, and an initial exhibition by the director of the Instituto Cervantes, Juan Manuel Casado Ramos. In a first block of questions, the exhibitors reflected on past and present problems, structural and conjunctural, of the Brazilian education system, such as educational inequalities, the devaluation of education professionals, the privatization movements of public education, homeschooling, among other essential topics. In the second block, based on this situational assessment, provocations were made regarding the future prospects for Brazilian Basic Education, especially public education, in view of the moment of political renewal in the country. Issues such as the resumption of educational public policies with redistributive effects to reduce inequalities, adequate implementation of curriculum policies, combating racism and how education and school practices can help combat polarization and violence and enhance dialogue were part of the subjects brought to the table. The AIPG community of teachers and education professionals, representatives of civil society partner organizations, representatives of Embassies, among others interested in the subject, also took part in the event as guests. No dia 10 de Novembro, o Programa de Políticas Educacionais Warren (WEPP) do Instituto Auschwitz para a Prevenção do Genocídio e Atrocidades Massivas (AIPG) promoveu no Instituto Cervantes em São Paulo, o evento Educação e Democracia no Brasil. O WEPP aproveitou o lançamento local do relatório de pesquisa A Educação Democrática Requer Imaginação, uma iniciativa do AIPG em parceria com a organização britânica Protection Approaches, que buscou refletir sobre como a educação pode ser uma resposta fundamental e efetiva diante dos retrocessos democráticos globais, para reunir especialistas com vistas a debater sobre os desafios da educação democrática no atual contexto brasileiro de renovação política. A discussão contou com a participação de Anna Helena Altenfelder (Cenpec), Crislei Custódio (Instituto Vladimir Herzog), João Marcelo Borges (Instituto Unibanco) e Michael França (Insper), além da moderação da diretora do WEPP, Clara Ramírez Barat, e de uma exposição inicial do diretor do Instituto Cervantes, Juan Manuel Casado Ramos. Em um primeiro bloco de perguntas, os/as expositores/as refletiram sobre problemáticas passadas e presentes, estruturais e conjunturais, do sistema de educação brasileiro, como as desigualdades educacionais, a desvalorização dos profissionais de educação, os movimentos de privatização da educação pública, o homeschooling, dentre outros tópicos essenciais. Já no segundo bloco, a partir desse balanço situacional, foram feitas provocações a respeito das perspectivas futuras para a Educação Básica brasileira, sobretudo a pública, tendo em vista o momento de renovação política no país. Questões como a retomada de políticas públicas educacionais com efeitos redistributivos para a redução das desigualdades, implementação adequada de políticas curriculares, combate ao racismo e como a educação e práticas escolares podem auxiliar no combate à polarização e violência e na potencialização do diálogo foram parte dos assuntos trazidos à mesa. Também fizeram parte do evento como convidados/as parte da comunidade de professores/as e profissionais de educação do AIPG, representantes de organizações parceiras da sociedade civil, representantes de Embaixadas, dentre outros/as interessados/as na temática.
