From October 2 to 3, the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG), in collaboration with the Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention (I-GMAP) at Binghamton University, held the third and final workshop of the Safer Havens project in Oradea, Romania.
Following previous workshops held in Colombia in 2023 (final report) and Kenya in 2024 (final report), this edition brought together 30 representatives from state institutions, refugee-led organizations, academia, civil society, and local, national, and international NGOs from Colombia, Kenya, and Romania.
The first day of the workshop included working groups and plenary sessions focused on analyzing the main risks faced by refugees in Romania and the challenges encountered by governmental and social actors in effectively addressing them. Building on these discussions, the second day focused on identifying good practices and developing concrete proposals to implement and strengthen protection and prevention measures.
The event concluded with a comparative analysis of the challenges faced by refugees in Colombia, Kenya, and Romania, highlighting the solutions implemented in each country to promote social integration and reduce the risks of identity-based violence. The closing included a reception with local community leaders and organizations, serving as a space for celebration and strengthening multisectoral collaboration networks.
The meeting in Oradea also provided an opportunity to share the final steps planned for the Safer Havens project in 2026. These include a report with recommendations for the protection of refugees in Romania based on the workshop's conclusions, and a comprehensive final document compiling the synthesis, results, and proposals developed throughout the three workshops.
Del 2 al 3 de octubre, el Instituto Auschwitz para la Prevención del Genocidio y las Atrocidades Masivas (AIPG), en colaboración con el Instituto para la Prevención del Genocidio y las Atrocidades Masivas (I-GMAP) de la Universidad de Binghamton, organizó el tercer y último taller del proyecto Refugios más Seguros en Oradea, Rumania.
Luego de los talleres anteriores realizados en Colombia en 2023 (informe final), y en Kenia en 2024 (informe final), esta edición reunió a 30 representantes de organismos estatales, organizaciones lideradas por personas refugiadas, el ámbito académico, sociedad civil y ONGs locales, nacionales e internacionales de Colombia, Kenia y Rumania.
El primer día del taller incluyó grupos de trabajo y sesiones plenarias dedicadas al análisis de los principales riesgos que enfrentan las personas refugiadas en Rumania y los desafíos que encuentran lxs actores gubernamentales y sociales para abordarlos de manera eficaz. A partir de estas reflexiones, el segundo día se enfocó en identificar buenas prácticas y formular propuestas concretas para implementar y fortalecer medidas de protección y prevención.
El evento concluyó con un análisis comparativo de los desafíos que enfrentan las personas refugiadas en Colombia, Kenia y Rumania destacando las soluciones implementadas en cada país para promover la integración social y reducir los riesgos de violencia basada en la identidad. Para el cierre, se realizó una recepción con líderes y organizaciones comunitarias locales que sirvió como espacio de celebración y fortalecimiento de redes de colaboración multisectorial.
El encuentro en Oradea también permitió compartir los pasos finales del proyecto Refugios más Seguros planeados para 2026. Estos incluyen un informe con recomendaciones para la protección de personas refugiadas en Rumania basado en las conclusiones del taller, y un documento final integral que reúna la síntesis, resultados y propuestas generadas a lo largo de los tres talleres.
